Make Time for Celebrations

Ten years ago, I completed my masters of science in systems engineering at the age of 47. I overcame my trauma of barely graduating from a rigorous engineering undergraduate program 25 years earlier. 

I took the graduate classes while working full-time, with four children in middle and high school, on weekends. Those weekends were precious, because family celebrations tend to happen on the weekends. I missed niece and nephew graduations, weddings and my own children’s sport or music events, not to mention summer barbecues and beach days. 

Because of those sacrifices, my own graduation tasted even sweeter; I had kept a promise to myself and I excelled. I celebrated with my classmates , my husband and children and it was so meaningful. It was rewarding to have a full life, with a loving support team share in my academic success.

Since then, I’ve attended many weddings and graduations. My two youngest have had 2 graduations each, my eldest daughter completed her undergrad degree last fall on an extended plan and my eldest son was married 3 years ago. So much has changed in 10 years. But one thing hasn’t changed- my love for learning and for celebration. Life is about growing and joy. 

Since then, I’ve taken other classes, workshops, worked with career and business coaches, founded several businesses and in the last year, I’ve devoted 100’s of hours to watching YouTube videos about health and self-improvement. I celebrate every time I learn something new or visit a new place.

Make time for the things which bring you joy- whatever that is. It’s summer, school’s out, so celebrate!
